TEST YOUR STUDENT’S SOCIAL SAVVY

A full-day grade 9 field trip combining Social 9 review, crime prevention, and history. Developed in consultation with a Master’s level IB history and Social studies teacher, this program aims to expand students knowledge of the CPS, while reviewing key concepts and skills to prepare for their exam.

WHAT TO EXPECT

– Exploration of our cutting-edge museum
– Three hands-on workshops led by our YouthLink experts
– One complimentary workshop to take back to school, to further extend learning and PAT preparation.

Through this exciting new program, students will be challenged to interpret a variety of sources, both modern and historical, in our engaging museum spaces. This experience connects directly to the social curriculum with emphasis on skills and attitudes that will prepare students for writing their exam, while reviewing the content in an engaging and fun way. Students will participate in three hands-on workshops in this program, with the following themes: Repealing historical laws in Canada, the history of EDI at CPS, and interpreting Calgary’s gang war and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The goal of this program is to provide the application of the Social 9 content to a new context- Reviewing social concepts in a new environment, through the lens of Police history and modern day practices, and community safety in Calgary.

Who Can Apply

Any grade 9 class located with Calgary City Limits.

Availability

April – June, Mondays to Thursdays. Maximum of TWO classes per day.

Program Training

Full-day program (4.5 hours). We are able to adapt this program to a 2.5 hour half-day program as needed

Program Cost

Transportation, and a program fee of $5 per student.

Can I bring my whole family?

Absolutely! Summer Safety Day is designed for families, friends, and community members of all ages. Whether you’re coming with toddlers, teens, grandparents, or just yourself — everyone is welcome, and there are no age restrictions.

Is there a cost to attend?

No— this event is completely free, including access to the YouthLink Calgary Police Interpretive Centre. We do welcome donations, which directly support YouthLink’s local crime prevention programs.

Will food be available?

Yes! Our friends at Co-Op are generously providing a free BBQ for attendees — while supplies last. Arrive early to make sure you don’t miss out.

Where can I park?

Free street parking is available near YouthLink. We recommend arriving early to secure a spot.

What is the Summer Safety Day Passport?

Each guest can pick up a Summer Safety Day Passport at the welcome table. Visit vendor booths throughout the event to collect stamps — then enter for your chance to win great prizes! It’s a fun and interactive way to explore the day and learn about safety.

Will this event still happen if it rains or snows?

Yes — rain, shine, or even snow, Summer Safety Day will go on! The event includes both indoor and outdoor activities, so we recommend dressing for the weather.

Why should I register if it’s free?

Registration isn’t mandatory, but it helps us prepare — especially when it comes to food, passports, and seating for presentations. By registering, you help us ensure a great experience for everyone.

Can I explore the exhibits inside YouthLink during the event?

Yes! All attendees get free access to YouthLink’s interactive exhibits, including scavenger hunts, forensic displays, historic policing tools, and real crime stories. It’s a hands-on experience that turns every visitor into a detective for the day.

Are there activities for younger children?

Yes! There are activities suitable for all age groups, including scavenger hunts, meeting Simon the Safety Bear, and visiting with our VAST trauma dogs. The entire event is designed to be family-friendly and fun for everyone.

Will there be first responders on-site to meet?

Yes! You’ll have the chance to meet Calgary police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and more. It’s a great opportunity to connect with the people who keep our community safe.
